PLYMOUTH MEDICAL SOCIETY
with Yealm Gig Rowing Club
Saturday 28 April 2018
4pm at The Ship Inn, Noss Mayo, PL8 1EW
This event was advertised as an opportunity for PMS members to try their hand at fixed-seat rowing in 6-oar classic Cornish Pilot Gigs. Gig rowing has grown in popularity, with the annual World Championships in the Scilly Isles now attracting well over 100 gigs from Cornwall, Devon and even further afield.
The event was attended by 10 Yealm Gig Rowing Club members and 7 Plymouth Medical Society members: Brett Whitby-Smith, Tom Doel, David Lort and Robert Jeffery, who rowed, Diana Simms, Sue Overal and Geoff Perham as spectators and Catherine Perham as guest. There was no need for multiple outings as those present filled the two available gigs, Wasp and Joker, with Club Members Glen and Tracie Tarran coxing a mixture of novices and experienced rowers with ages ranging from 20s to 70s.
We took a leisurely pace on the way out towards Kitley and had a short race back from the harbourmaster’s to Kiln Quay, with the immediate past President’s crew conceding defeat.
The landlady of The Ship Inn, Mrs Lisa Bullock, kindly provided sandwiches and chips for the thirsty rowers afterwards at a nominal cost and it was therefore possible to run the event at a cost of only £5 temporary membership of the Gig Club, for the two Society Members who rowed and were not already members.
